Monday Readings

The National Writers Union will be hosting a reading and open mic on Monday, May 16, starting at 6:00 p.m. The meeting will be held in person (we also hope to have a Zoom component, information on that will follow).

Our featured reader this month will be Tucson-based journalist and author Miriam Davidson, who will read from and discuss her new book, The Beloved Border: Humanity and Hope in a Contested Land (University of Arizona Press, 2021). Based on her more than 30 years of reporting, the book draws on a variety of sources to show how border issues intersect, and how despite problems, the region is in many ways a model of peaceful international cooperation. Miriam is author of two previous books on border issues (Convictions of the Heart, 1988, and Lives on the Line, 2000, both published by the University of Arizona Press), and has written for The New York TimesAARP BulletinThe NationThe Progressive, and many other outlets. She lives in Tucson.

The open mic is for spoken word only, but is open to all forms of spoken word (fiction, essays, poetry, articles, polemics, etc.).

The meeting will be held at the Pima Area Labor Federation Office at 5630 E Pima St. in Tucson, which is a block east of Craycroft Road (Pima is between Grant and Speedway). It is on the south side of the street and ample parking is available both behind the building and on its east side. There is also limited parking directly in front of the building.

Per Pima County Health Department guidelines, masks are recommended but not required, and face masks will be available for use. The size of the room should also be adequate for social distancing.

Friday Morning Breakfasts

NWU Tucson Friday morning breakfasts will be on hiatus until further notice. Check back for dates. They take place at 9:00 a.m. at Laverna's Coffee Shop. The address is 220 S. Plumer, which is one block south of Broadway, on the west side of Plumer.
